OVERVIEW: Brunei's sultan, Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin, will retain autocratic powers in 2008-09 and is in a position to dictate the pace of implementation of plans for a partial democratisation of the sultanate. Real GDP is expected to contract in 2008, owing to problems in the energy sector, before making a modest recovery in 2009. Large current-account surpluses are likely in 2008-09.
